Student Moving in Dehradun: Hostels, PGs and Semester Dates

One room, a tight budget and a date set by the semester. What a student move actually costs in Dehradun, and how to pay less.

A student move is the job most often quoted badly, because a full-house rate applied to one room's worth of goods is absurd. It is also one of the more common moves we do — Dehradun's campus belt keeps us busy twice a year, on a calendar that has nothing to do with the general moving season.

    What it should cost

    MoveIndicative
    Single room, within Dehradun₹1,500 – ₹4,000
    Single room + bike, within Dehradun₹2,500 – ₹5,500
Room load, Dehradun to Delhi (part load)₹3,500 – ₹7,000
    Room load, Dehradun to Lucknow / Jaipur₹5,000 – ₹9,500
    Vacation storage, per month₹800 – ₹1,800

Indicative bands. Within the city, the number of flights of stairs moves the figure more than the volume does — a fourth-floor PG with no lift is a different job from a ground-floor room with the same amount of stuff.

    How to pay less

    • Share a vehicle. Intercity student loads are small, and if two or three of you are heading the same way in the same week, one vehicle serving all of you costs each of you a fraction of a dedicated trip. Ask about it — we can often match loads within the campus belt.
    • Be flexible by a day or two. That flexibility is what makes consolidation possible.
    • Avoid the semester-end crush. The week everyone vacates is the week everything costs more and nothing is available.
    • Store rather than transport. If you are coming back next term, storing over the vacation is usually far cheaper than moving everything home and back.

    Vacation storage, specifically

Paying rent on a room you are not using for two months is common and rarely necessary. Our warehouse is on Chandrabani Road in Sewla Khurd, ten minutes from most of the campus belt, and monthly storage of a room's contents costs a fraction of a room's rent. We collect at the end of term and deliver at the start of the next.

Two conditions: nothing damp goes into storage, and no food, sealed or otherwise. Both are how a stored load becomes a problem.

    Campus access

Graphic Era, DIT, UPES and Doon University all require an entry pass for a goods vehicle, and hostel wardens usually want notice. Give us the institution and hostel name at booking and we arrange it — a couple of days is enough. Turning up unannounced at a hostel gate with a tempo does not work.

    Packing a room properly

Most of it is straightforward, but three things go wrong repeatedly:

    • Books go in small boxes. A large carton of textbooks fails at the base, always. Small cartons, and more of them.
    • Laptop and hard drives travel with you, in your bag. Not in a carton, whatever the assurances.
    • Musical instruments and lab equipment need saying out loud. A guitar, a keyboard, a drafting set, a microscope — these get individual handling and we need to know they exist.

    Timing around the academic year

Demand in the campus belt peaks sharply at semester start and semester end, and those weeks are booked out early. If your dates are fixed by the university — which they usually are — book two to three weeks ahead rather than the week of. Within the city we can often accommodate a small move at two or three days' notice outside those peaks.
