When Your New Home Is Not Ready: A Guide to Moving Storage

Move dates and possession dates rarely line up. A fit-out overruns, a handover is disputed, a lease starts three weeks after the old one ends. Storage between the two is common enough that you should know how it works before you need it.

How it works

Your goods are packed and loaded as normal, then delivered to a warehouse instead of a home. They stay palletised or in a dedicated section, inventoried, until you call for delivery. Ideally the same company handles both legs, so there is one inventory and one accountable party rather than a handover in the middle.

What it costs

Usually charged monthly by volume. As an indication, a 2BHK household occupies roughly 400–600 cubic feet and costs in the region of ₹2,500–₹5,000 a month in Dehradun, plus a handling charge in and out. Ask specifically whether in-and-out handling is included or charged separately — it is a common surprise.

Critically: agree the storage rate at quotation stage, even if you are confident you will not need it. Negotiating storage while your furniture is already on a truck is negotiating from zero leverage.

What to look for in a warehouse

• Visit it. A company that will not show you where your things will be kept is telling you something.
• Raised, dry flooring — goods on pallets, not on a concrete floor that wicks damp
• Pest control with a documented schedule
• Fire equipment and a clear layout, not floor-to-ceiling stacking with no aisles
• Your consignment kept as an identifiable, separated block
• Insurance that continues to apply during storage — this is not automatic, and transit cover often ends at warehouse delivery

Packing differently for storage

Goods sitting for weeks need more than goods travelling for days.

• Nothing damp goes in. Mattresses, curtains, and anything washed shortly before the move must be fully dry, or you are storing mildew.
• Plastic-wrap cartons, particularly for anything stored through a monsoon.
• Empty and dry the fridge and washing machine completely. Leave fridge doors slightly ajar if the storage arrangement allows.
• Do not store food, including sealed packets. It is the fastest route to a pest problem.
• Label for retrieval, not just for rooms. If you will need something during the storage period, it needs to be findable without unstacking everything.
• Keep a copy of the inventory. Photograph it.

Short gap or long gap?

For under a week, it is often cheaper to keep the goods loaded on the vehicle — a detention charge for a few days can beat two handling charges plus storage. For anything beyond that, warehousing is the right answer. Ask your mover to price both; a good one will tell you which is cheaper for your actual gap rather than defaulting to the more expensive option.
