Moving Costs
Why a 30 km Move Can Cost More Than a 300 km One
Distance is one of the smaller inputs to a moving quote. Here is what the money is actually paying for, with examples.
Customers reasonably assume moving cost scales with distance. It does, but weakly — and understanding the real cost structure explains quotes that otherwise look arbitrary.
Where the money actually goes
| Component | Share of a typical quote |
|---|---|
| Crew time (packing, carrying, loading, unloading) | 35–45% |
| Vehicle and fuel | 20–30% |
| Packing materials | 10–20% |
| Insurance, tolls, taxes, overheads | 15–25% |
Distance affects only the vehicle-and-fuel line. Crew time — the largest component — is driven almost entirely by access.
Two worked examples
Dehradun to Mussoorie, 35 km, 2BHK
Vehicle change for the climb, narrow lanes, and a carry up thirty steps at the destination. Crew of five for a full day. Indicative: ₹8,000–₹15,000.
Dehradun to Chandigarh, 200 km, 2BHK
Full-size truck to the door at both ends, sector-grid access, parking available, crew of four. Indicative: ₹10,000–₹17,500.
Six times the distance, marginally more money. The Mussoorie job is nearly as expensive because it takes nearly as many people nearly as long.
What raises a quote most, in order
- Floors without a lift. Each floor adds real, cumulative carrying time.
- Carry distance from the vehicle. Fifty metres is a different job from five.
- Lane width forcing a smaller vehicle, and possibly two trips.
- Volume. More stuff, more time, bigger vehicle.
- Fragile and specialist items needing individual crating.
- Distance. Genuinely fifth or sixth on the list for anything under 500 km.
What this means for you
- Telling a mover your floor, your lift dimensions and your lane width gets you a far more accurate quote than telling them the distance.
- Decluttering reduces volume, which reduces crew time — the largest cost line.
- If you are choosing between two flats, the one with a working service lift is meaningfully cheaper to move into, and will be again when you leave.
- Be suspicious of any quote given without asking about access. It is not a price, it is a placeholder.
