The Hidden Charges in a Moving Quote — and How to Find Them First

Not every extra charge is a scam. Some are genuinely unforeseeable, and a mover who absorbs every surprise will either go out of business or pad every quote to cover the worst case. The problem is charges that were foreseeable and simply were not mentioned — because a lower headline number wins the booking.

1. Floor or staircase charges

Charged per floor above the ground where there is no lift. Legitimate in principle: carrying a fridge to the fourth floor is real work. It stops being legitimate when nobody asked what floor you live on before quoting.

Ask: "Is the floor charge included, and what is it per floor if my lift is out of service on the day?"

2. Long carry / distance charges

Applied when the vehicle cannot park within a certain distance of the door. Very common in older city areas and in societies where trucks are kept at the gate.

Ask: "What carry distance is included, and what is the rate beyond it?"

3. Packing material top-ups

The quote covers "standard packing", and then the crew decides your glassware needs extra bubble wrap. Sometimes true, often not.

Ask: "Is the material cost capped, or is it charged on actual use?"

4. Dismantling and reassembly

Some quotes include taking furniture apart but not putting it back together. Read that line carefully — it is a favourite.

5. Toll, octroi and state entry

Legitimate pass-through costs on intercity moves. They should be either included or stated as an estimate with the route named, not left as an open-ended "as applicable".

6. Waiting charges

Charged when the crew waits — for your society's lift booking, for the new flat's keys, for a payment to clear. Fair enough, but you should know the free waiting period and the hourly rate before the day.

7. Storage or detention

If your new place is not ready, goods go into storage. The daily rate for that should be on the quote, not negotiated while your furniture is on a truck and your leverage is zero.

8. Insurance that is not insurance

"Insurance included" sometimes means a basic transit protection with a low per-item cap. Ask what the maximum payout per item is and what the exclusions are. If nobody will put that in writing, assume the answer is unfavourable.

9. GST

Not hidden exactly, but frequently quoted exclusive of tax when the customer assumed inclusive. A ₹20,000 quote is ₹23,600 with GST at 18%, and that is a real difference in a budget.

The single question that does most of the work

"Is this the final amount I will pay if nothing about my move changes?" Anyone who cannot answer that with a plain yes has something in the quote they have not told you about. It is a fair question and a good mover will welcome it, because it is exactly the conversation that prevents an argument on moving day.
