Moving Around Festival Season in Uttarakhand

Most moving advice about festivals is about auspicious dates. This is about roads. In Uttarakhand a handful of weeks each year make certain routes genuinely impractical, and they are not the weeks a national calendar would flag.

Kanwar Yatra — July and August

The big one, and the one most often underestimated. For roughly a fortnight, the Haridwar–Rishikesh–Dehradun corridor carries enormous pedestrian traffic and heavy vehicle restrictions apply for days at a stretch. Whole stretches of the Delhi–Haridwar highway are effectively closed to goods vehicles.

If your route touches that corridor — which includes almost anything between Dehradun and Delhi, and everything to Haridwar, Rishikesh or Roorkee — plan around these dates rather than through them. We will tell you when they fall for the year and we will not book a load into the middle of them.

Char Dham season — May to October

Yatra traffic makes the Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Joshimath and Uttarkashi routes slow and, at peak, close to unusable for a loaded truck during the day. Our answer is early starts — pickups before 6 am to clear the confluence bottlenecks before the buses.

If your move is to or through those towns between May and October, expect a departure time that feels unreasonably early. It is the difference between a delivery today and a delivery tomorrow.

Diwali week

The three days either side are effectively unbookable anywhere in India. Crews take leave, city traffic is impossible, and markets are at their busiest. Beyond the availability problem, an unloading crew working a Diwali evening is not doing anyone's furniture any favours.

The fortnight before Diwali is also busier than usual — a lot of families want to be in the new house for the festival, and that demand is real and predictable. Book early if that is your plan.

Local dates worth knowing

• Ganga Dussehra and Somvati Amavasya — heavy congestion around Haridwar's ghats and the approach roads.
• Harela, in July — a state holiday, and crews take it.
• Igas Bagwal, the Garhwali Diwali eleven days after the main one — significant in the hills and largely invisible on national calendars.
• Nanda Devi Raj Jat and the local fairs — these affect specific towns for a few days rather than the whole state.

What we do about it

We check the calendar before quoting a date, and we say so if the date you have asked for sits in a window we know is going to be difficult. A mover who cheerfully books a Haridwar delivery in the middle of Kanwar Yatra either does not know the route or is not planning to think about it until the day.

The upside

Festival weeks are surrounded by quiet ones. The fortnight after Diwali is one of the better times of year to move in Uttarakhand — roads clear, weather settled, demand collapsed, and rates soft. If you can be patient by ten days, you often get a better move for less money.

On auspicious dates

Plenty of families do choose a date on the panchang, and we will work to it. Worth knowing: those dates concentrate demand, sometimes severely, and a griha pravesh date shared by a hundred other families in Dehradun is a date on which every mover in the city is fully booked. If your date is fixed by the calendar, book it as far ahead as you possibly can.
