Moving During the Dehradun Monsoon: What Actually Goes Wrong
Dehradun's monsoon is heavy, sustained and unpredictable. Here is what fails in the rain, what protects against it, and when it is worth simply moving your date.
Dehradun receives well over 2,000 mm of rain in an average year and most of it falls between late June and September. Moving in that window is entirely possible — we do it constantly — but the things that go wrong are specific and preventable.
What actually fails in the rain
Cardboard
A corrugated carton loses most of its structural strength once damp. It does not need to be soaked; ambient humidity over a few hours is enough for a stacked carton to sag and for the one underneath to collapse. This is the single commonest monsoon damage, and it is entirely a packing-method problem.
Mattresses and upholstery
Foam absorbs water readily and dries slowly. A mattress that gets wet during a ten-minute load can still be damp three days later, which is long enough for mildew to establish.
Wooden furniture joints
Solid wood swells. Joints that were tight become tight-and-stressed, and veneer lifts at the edges. Dismantled furniture in a damp truck is more vulnerable than assembled furniture, not less.
Electronics
Condensation, not rain, is the risk. Equipment moved from an air-conditioned room into a humid truck and back can condense internally. Letting devices acclimatise for a few hours before powering on matters more than people expect.
What we do differently between June and September
- Plastic over paper. Cartons are stretch-wrapped rather than taped alone. It is the single most effective change.
- Covered vehicles only. A tarpaulin over an open body is not adequate in Dehradun rain and we do not treat it as such.
- Loading under cover where possible. Reversing to a porch or a covered gate is worth the extra manoeuvring time.
- Mattresses in sealed bags, not cloth covers.
- Floor protection at both ends. Wet shoes on a marble staircase is how people get injured on moving day.
The lane problem
Several Dehradun areas — Majra, parts of Banjarawala, the newer unmade roads in Mothrowala and Raipur — hold water for a day or two after heavy rain. A loaded truck on a soft lane is how an afternoon disappears. In the monsoon we may stage on the main road and shuttle in with a smaller vehicle rather than commit a heavy vehicle to a lane that will not hold it.
When to just move the date
If you are moving to the hills — Mussoorie, Nainital, Almora — and there is an active heavy-rain warning, move the date. Landslide closures on those roads are common in the monsoon and a load stuck on a hill road for two days is worse for your goods and your nerves than a week's delay. We will tell you when we think this applies, and we would rather reschedule than deliver a bad outcome on time.
The one advantage
Monsoon is the off-season. Rates are lower, dates are available at short notice, and you get a crew that is not on its third move of the day. If your goods are properly protected and your route is not a hill road, July to September is the cheapest time of year to move in Uttarakhand.
