Winter Moving in the Uttarakhand Hills

Winter is the cheapest time of year to move in Uttarakhand and the only time of year we will not commit to a fixed date for a hill destination. Both of those facts come from the same cause.

What actually closes

Snow rarely stops a hill move for long. What it does is close a road for a day or two at a time, with limited warning, and a loaded truck on the wrong side of that closure is a genuinely bad outcome — for the goods and for the schedule.

The routes that need watching between December and February:

• Dehradun–Mussoorie — brief closures after snowfall, usually cleared within a day. The Landour and upper Camel's Back stretches are the last to reopen.
• Chakrata — higher, colder, and the climb from Kalsi is the constraint.
• Almora, Ranikhet, Kausani — usually passable, occasionally not.
• Joshimath, Auli, upper Chamoli — the most weather-dependent destinations we serve. We plan these with a date range rather than a date, as a matter of policy.
• Uttarkashi valley — the road narrows past Chinyalisaur and we avoid it after dark in winter regardless of conditions.

The valley towns — Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Roorkee, Haldwani, Rudrapur — are unaffected. Winter there is simply a good, cheap time to move.

How we plan a winter hill move

• A date range, not a date. Usually a three-day window, confirmed 48 hours ahead against actual conditions.
• Earlier starts. Daylight is short and the roads are worst in the early morning and after dark. Loading starts at first light so the climb happens in the warmest part of the day.
• Smaller vehicles. More so than in summer — a smaller, lighter vehicle handles a cold road far better than a fully loaded large one.
• No night driving on hill sections. Not negotiable.
• We will postpone. If there is an active warning, we move the date rather than the truck. This is stated at booking so it is not a surprise later.

Packing changes in the cold

• Anything with liquid in it — paint, some cleaning products, sealed drinks — can freeze and split on a cold hill route. These come out of the load.
• Electronics need longer to acclimatise. Coming from a cold truck into a heated room, condensation forms internally. Four hours before switching anything on, not one.
• Wooden furniture handles cold well but dislikes the swing — cold truck to heated room. Padding stays on until it has settled.
• Plants do not travel in winter on a hill route. There is no packing that solves this.

At the destination

Two practical things people forget. First, check that the water supply at the new house is running — pipes freeze in the higher stations and a house that has been empty may have no water when you arrive. Second, arrange heating before the furniture, not after. Unpacking in an unheated hill house in January is a genuinely miserable day.

Why it is still worth doing

Rates are at their lowest, dates are available at short notice, and you get a crew that is not on its third job of the day. For a valley destination, winter is straightforwardly the best value in the calendar. For a hill destination, it is good value in exchange for flexibility — and if your date is immovable, wait for March.
