Weekday or Weekend? The Cost and the Catch

Most people default to a Saturday because it is the day they are free. It is also the day everyone else is free, and that costs money and time.

Weekdays are cheaper, by a real margin

Roughly 10–15% in peak season, less in the off-season, and the gap widens at month end. It is straightforward supply and demand — a Tuesday in mid-September is the least contested slot in the calendar, and a Saturday at the end of April is the most.

Weekdays are also faster, which people underestimate

• Traffic. Counter-intuitive but true in Dehradun: Saturday afternoons on Rajpur Road and around Ballupur are worse than a weekday mid-morning, and Sunday markets clog Paltan Bazaar and Niranjanpur.
• Crew freshness. A crew on its first job of the day works better than one on its third. Weekend schedules are stacked.
• Society staff. The person who issues the gate pass and unlocks the service lift often does not work weekends. This is a genuine and frequent cause of delay.
• Everyone else you need. The electricity office, the gas distributor, the broadband technician, your bank — all weekday operations.

The catch, and it is a real one

Many societies restrict or prohibit moving at weekends — and a growing number in Gurgaon, Noida and Bengaluru allow it only on weekdays. Meanwhile commercial buildings usually work the other way round: office and shop moves happen at weekends precisely because the business is closed.

So the answer differs by move type:

• Household: weekday if you can take the leave. Tuesday to Thursday is the sweet spot.
• Office or shop: weekend or overnight, almost always. Losing a trading day costs more than the move.
• Long distance: the loading day matters less; ask instead when the vehicle departs, because that is what sets the delivery date.

Within the month

Month end — the 28th to the 5th — is the busiest window of every month, because rent cycles concentrate there. Mid-month is quieter, cheaper and easier to book at short notice. If your lease dates allow any flexibility at all, a mid-month weekday is the cheapest move available to you.

Time of day

Early is better, everywhere, for reasons that vary by area:

• Congested markets — Paltan Bazaar, Prince Chowk, Niranjanpur — need a start before 7 am or an evening slot.
• Summer means loading at dawn to avoid handling goods at 40°C.
• NCR deliveries are frequently early-morning by law rather than by choice, because of goods-vehicle entry restrictions.

A 7 am start regularly finishes a 2BHK before a 10 am start has loaded it.

The one day to avoid

A Sunday in the last week of April. Peak season, peak weekend, peak month-end, all at once. If you have any choice, choose almost anything else.
