Change of Address in India: Every Update You Need to Make

Aadhaar first, then everything else. The complete list of address changes after an Indian house move, in the order that actually works.

The order matters. Aadhaar is the base document that several other updates reference, so do it first — everything else is faster once it has propagated.

    Do first: Aadhaar

Update online through the UIDAI self-service portal with a valid proof of address, or at an enrolment centre. Allow a week or two for it to reflect. Almost every other update below goes more smoothly afterwards.

    Government and identity

    • PAN — update through the NSDL or UTIITSL portal. Needed for banking and tax correspondence.
    • Voter ID — Form 8 on the NVSP portal, for a shift within or between constituencies.
    • Driving licence — at the RTO covering your new address. If you have moved states, this also involves re-registering your vehicle.
    • Vehicle registration (RC) — required if you have changed states, along with a NOC from the old RTO. This is the slowest item on the list; start it early.
    • Passport — a re-issue application with the new address, if you want it current.

    Money

    • Bank accounts — usually online, sometimes requiring a branch visit
    • Credit cards
    • Demat and trading accounts
    • Insurance policies — life, health, vehicle
    • EPF and NPS records
    • Mutual fund folios (a single KYC address update often covers several)

    Utilities and services

    • Electricity — final reading and closure at the old address, new connection or name transfer at the new one
    • Water and municipal tax
    • LPG connection — transfer through your distributor; the cylinder itself does not travel with you
    • Broadband — check serviceability at the new address before you cancel the old connection
    • DTH — a relocation request rather than a new connection

    Family and daily life

    • School transfer certificates and new admissions — start 3–4 weeks ahead
    • Medical records and a new doctor
    • Society or RWA registration at the new address
    • Domestic help, milk delivery, newspaper — cancel one, arrange the other

    Postal redirection

India Post offers a redirection service at the head post office covering your old address. It is inexpensive and catches the things you inevitably forget. Six months is usually enough.

    A practical order

    1. Aadhaar
    2. Bank and PAN
    3. Utilities at both ends
    4. Vehicle RC and driving licence, if you changed states — start these early because they are slow
    5. Insurance, investments, employer records
    6. Voter ID and passport
    7. Postal redirection as the safety net
